Cash Machines That Will Not Give You Any Money!
Whether you believe it or not we have all heard of the ATM card slot scam. It involves thieves putting a thin, clear, rigid plastic ‘sleeve’ into the ATM card slot. Once an unsuspecting user inserts a card, the machine cannot seem to read the card. It keeps asking you to re-enter your PIN number. Each time you try and enter the PIN someone else close to you would try and record your PIN. After several attempts you give up, thinking the machine has swallowed your card and you walk away. Once you have left the criminals remove the plastic strip with your card and then empty your account. There are variations of this scam that allow your PIN to be recorded without the need for anyone watching. As technology improves the scam cash machines are acting more like the genuine machines.
The way to avoid this scam is to run your finger along the card slot before you use your card. The fake sleeve would have a couple of tiny prongs that are needed to get the sleeve out of the slot, and you should be able to feel them.
To avoid being a victim:
1. Try to avoid remote Cash machines, use the ones directly outside of a bank you know if possible.
2. Cover the keys while you type in your PIN.
3. If in any doubt call the bank immediately.
4. Do not write your PIN down, try remembering it.
5. If you must write your PIN down keep it separate from your card.
6. Check your bank statements suspicious activity.
Here is something that has happened quite recently. I was using a cash machine one I use regularly. I simply wanted to take out £20. I was distracted while I talked on the phone and took £10 from the cash slot. Just as I was about to leave I thought something was wrong so I decided to check the balance because in the back mind I was sure I should have really got £20. I checked my bank statement and it showed that £20 had been withdrawn. Only £10 came out of the cash slot. I then withdrew another £10, because I needed £20. Fortunately this time as the cash was dispensed the previous £10 came out along with the current £10. I now had £30 instead of £20. The lack of concentration and the fact that some money actually got stuck could have lead to losing that money and it could have been a lot worse. So be very careful when using any Cash machine.
