Whoever said “nothing in life is free” didn’t look hard enough – because in actuality, many things that are usually paid for can be found without a price tag. The trick is simply in knowing where to look – and when to ask. One of the best examples of this can be found in leisure activities.

In today’s economy, many households have cut down on leisure for the sake of saving money. But there are many free and enjoyable activities to be found; whether you’re looking to spend time with your friends, your kids, or a loved one.

For example, countless museums, galleries, and exhibits across the UK offer free admission – so it’s easy to plan a cultural outing without having to spend any money at all. Similarly, many outdoor activities – for example, hiking or going to the beach – offer a perfect way to spend the day with friends or family, minus any spend. And the best part is, you probably don’t have to go very far. Research all the local hiking or walking trails, botanical gardens, and best beaches in your area, and you could soon be on your way to enjoying a great leisure activity for free. Finally, look out for visiting festivals in your area. From art and music to food festivals, it costs nothing to stroll through and take in these lively events.

Another way to get something for nothing is to keep your eyes open for marketing offers. Numerous restaurants, bars, hotels and shops will extend promotional offers to consumers to raise their company profile – and such offers often mean free meals, hotels stays and more for consumers. Of course, being able to take advantage of these types of offers often depends on being in the right place at the right time – but you’d also be surprised as to what you can find if you keep your eyes open for such offers.

That being said, it never hurts to ask certain businesses if they’re currently offering – or plan to offer – any promotions or giveaways. Businesses are usually forthcoming with this type of information, and asking only means you’ll find out sooner than the general public. But asking can get you even more than promotional giveaways. If you travel often, it’s worth asking airlines or hotels if they can upgrade you on your flight or hotel for free. Many hotels will offer upgrades, based on various circumstances – such as availability, or customer loyalty. But once again, you have nothing to lose – and only something to gain – by asking.

And finally, don’t think that you always have to pay for your international calling. There are many internet communication services that enable you to make international calls for free. Of course, you would need a computer and an internet connection – so it can be argued that this freebie isn’t entirely free. Still, many people pay an additional fee for international calling plans, when they can essentially be making those calls for no extra fee at all. So if you’re equipped with a computer and a broadband service, take advantage of being able to make free calls all over the world – whether you want to make calls to USA, China, India, or within Europe.

In the end, knowing where to look and when to ask can get you a number of items, services, and experiences for free. So don’t shy away from looking for such opportunities, and save on everything from leisure to international calling.
