Swing trading is a business and in order to keep you in you must stick to certain rules. There are many more rules to know, however, we will cover the most important ones.
Set out a trading plan and stick to it
This rule is downright boring but really important in order to keep you in the game. But what’s inside a trading plan?
A trading plan can take on the form of a questionnaire in which you include all important questions to consider before entering a position. Questions such as what are your entry signals, when do you exit a position for a profit or a loss, what are your time horizon are all important ones that you should think of before making any decision.
Trade in the direction of the overall maket
Most of your short position trades should be made when the market is in bear mode. Conversely, most of your long position trades should be made when the market is in bull mode. Skilled swing traders follow the direction of the overall market.
Another important indicator are industry groups. They can help in choosing whether or not to trade certain stocks during a period of time.
Don’t let emotions control you
Emotions are your biggest enemy. As they are inner to the human being swing traders can do little but try to inhibit them. There are many ways to control emotions but only you can find those that work better for you.
Trying to inhibit emotions is an ongoing battle and you’ll find out that some days they are harder to get over. Practice being calm and make sure you know when it’s time to get out the craziness and take some quality time to relax and find out what’s going wrong, all of this with hindsight.
