Pet Names – What’s In A Name
After polling hundreds of cat and dog owners, we can finally reveal a cross-section of the nation’s favourite names for each – and one name is top of the pops for both groups.
Whether your bark is worse than your bite or you’re cool for cats the name that’s top cat and leader of the pack – by a country mile among cats – is Molly.
Among dog lovers Molly was only ahead by a nose – it pipped Poppy at the post. But for cat lovers Molly is smiling as though she got the cream – polling as she did three times as many votes as her nearest rival, Charlie.
Perhaps dog and cat lovers are more alike than they may care to admit – of the top five names in both camps, three were the same (Molly, Poppy and Charlie).
The also-rans for dogs were Max and Alfie, while among cats they were Oscar and Millie.
When naming their pets, dog and cat lovers draw inspiration from a wide range of sources.
Dog lovers seem to have something of a sweet tooth. Popular names include Fudge, Rolo, Muffin, Candy, Truffle and Mars – improbably, a couple of respondents went with Twix.
And other owners obviously had food on their mind when they went with Honey, Biscuit, Marmite, Noodles and Waffle. One even ended up as Sausage – perhaps it was a dachshund.
And heroes of sport, stage and state are often honoured, with a smattering of Rooneys, Arnies, Gerrards, Churchills – even Harry Hill and Cher got in on the act.
The animal lovers surveyed also seem to like a drink – some dogs with spirit were called Brandy, Whisky, Gin, Rum and even one hairy chap who goes by the proud name of Jack Daniels.
Cat lovers are less rock ‘n’ roll when it comes to their naming sources. Children’s films play an important part in the process, with some popular names including Tigger, Sooty, Caspar, Nemo, Snoopy (confusingly) and – unsurprisingly – Garfield.
One owner even ran the risk of giving their feline friend something of an identity crisis by plumping for Bugs Bunny – so if you spot a moggy gnawing on a carrot, don’t be surprised.
